The Viking Ship Museum’s Boat Guilds

The Viking Ship Museum currently has a boat collection of about 40 boats. These include reconstructions of archaeological finds from the Viking Age and traditional Nordic working boats. About 9 of these boats are sailed by volunteer members of the Viking Ship Museum’s Boat Guilds.

The museum works actively with the boat societies to take the boat collection out sailing. In this way, we can help to develop and maintain the Danish maritime cultural heritage. A key task for the boat societies is to participate in the various research trial voyages and to disseminate knowledge about the boats, both at the museum and at the ports visited by the boats.

The cooperation between the boat guilds and the Viking Ship Museum is widely acknowledged, far beyond the museum itself, and each individual boat guilds has created a unique framework for the development of a unique social and specialist community.
