Special Exhibition: In the Wake of the Vikings
In 1962, the remains of five Viking ships emerged from the mud at Roskilde Fjord.The find turned out knowledge of Nordic maritime culture upside down and opened the door to the Viking Age world.
The special exhibition In the Wake of the Vikings is the story about how the five Skuldelev ships have influenced the maritime archaeology since then.
The special exhibition In the Wake of the Vikings is the story about how the five Skuldelev ships have shaped the museum to what it is today: how the remarkable find has been of crucial importance for maritime archaeology in Denmark and been the driving force behind far-reaching archaeological experiments within reconstruction and sailing.
Viking for a day – Autumn Holiday at the Viking Ship Museum
Become a Viking for a day - join the activities for all girls and boys. Every day, we offer the chance to live out your dream of being a Viking.
Take part in warrior training as a man-at-arms and challenge the adults to tests of strength, throwing games and tug-of-war. Every day, the proud chieftain will display his weapons and teach the young warriors to fight with sword and shield.
You can also bake Viking biscuits over an open fire!
In the King’s workshop you can:
• Dress up as a Viking warrior
• Take part in warrior training with the chieftain
• Strike royal coins
• Paint your own shield in beautiful colours
In the Queen’s workshop you can:
• Dress up as a Viking princess
• Design your own Viking jewellery
• Decorate your own Thor's Hammer
15.00: Guided tour in English
The Viking Ship Museum offers guided tours.
The guided tours are conducted by history and archaeology students. Their stories give life to the original ships and put the discovery of the five Skuldelev ships into perspective in relation to the maritime culture of the Viking Age.
The guided tours take about 45 minutes and cannot be booked in advance.
Groups are recommended to book a private tour.
In case of illness the schedule might change.

In the exhibition ‘Dive In – join the maritime archaeologist at work’ the sea floor’s treasure trove of artefacts and the stories they can tell us about cultural heritage from previous generations is recreated and brought to life, using interactive installations and film.
