The Viking Ship Museum’s temporary exhibitions have focused on various aspects of the Danish maritime culture in ancient and medieval times. Focusing on the ship, the museum’s West Room's temporary exhibitions have contributed to our understanding of the Viking era through exhibitions about the Vikings’ voyages to Ireland and the Kingdom of the Franks as well as their raids, conquests, trade and settlements in the areas.
At the boatyard, the temporary exhibitions have especially focused on understanding developments in Viking era boatbuilding through exhibitions about the iron age's stretched wooden boats and later eras’ fishing dinghies from Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord.
Over the past 8 years, specialist exhibitions have especially focused on the building of the Sea Stallion from Glendalough. There has been an exhibition about the reconstruction, building work and challenges involved. The exhibition was called ”The recreated ship” and in the West Room, the project ”Thoroughbred on the Sea” about the Sea Stallion’s voyage to Dublin took place while the ship was at sea. This exhibition will continue in 2009 and will communicate the overall result of the enormous experimental archaeological project.
