Sea Stallion Attack is a computer game where you must use what you have learnt on these pages to conquer the lands surrounding the North Sea.
The game is launched in a new window (remember to allow pop-ups). You need to have Flash Player installed.
Currently the texts you encounter in the game are in Danish, but with a few hints you should be able to get along:
- You are first met by the scald who informs you that the King has summoned you for an attempt at an attack on a neighbouring country. (click KONGSGÅRD)
- Here the King informs you of your destination: Oslo, Orkney, London or Dublin (see the miniature map).
- If you click 'SKIBSBYGGER' (boat builder) he tells you about your cargo capacity, min. and max. no of crew, speed and performance.
- If you click 'MADSVEND' (cook) he tells you how much a day's ration is.
- 'SKJALD' (the scald) tells you of the size of the army you will be facing.
- 'SYGEPASSER' (nurse) tells you the weight of a fully armed viking.
- When ready, click 'LAST SKIBET' (load the ship).
- Here you use the sliders for 'DAGSRATIONER' (day's rations) and 'VIKINGER' (men) to load your ship for the campaign at hand. When ready click 'STÆVN UD' (set sail).
- You are now offered the opportunity to wait for a favourable wind by clicking the wind vane. Everytime you click, four hours pass and your rations are consumed accordingly. When satisfied, click 'STÆVN UD' (set out).
- You must now navigate to your destination using your keyboard's arrow keys. You change to oars and back using the spacebar.
- Having arrived, you are informed of the size of your own and the opposing force. Click 'KLAR TIL KAMP'. Then click 'ANGRIB'. Your army is to the left.
- Having won, click 'VI HAR SEJRET' and then 'FORTSÆT' and 'FORTSÆT' again to return to the King's hall for a new assignment.
- If you are nearing the minimum crew size you are given the option of retreating ('TIL HAVHINGSTEN') or carrying on with the battle ('KÆMP VIDERE KRYSTERE').
- A second warning is given when you have reached the minimum crew size. Click 'FLYGT' to retreat for a second attempt at the same town or 'DETTE ER IKKE GALSKAB DETTE ER ROSKILDE' to fight on.
Was it like this in the Viking Age?
The game is based on realistic data for minimum and maximum crew size, consumption of provisions, speed and tacking performance. This information is partly gathered during the Sea Stallion's initial sea trials, partly found in contemporary litterature such as the Norwegian Gulating Law.
On the other hand you must of course imagine that, contrary to the game, you would not have met an enemy with a single ship but with a large fleet accompagnied by supply vessels.
