MEET NORDIC CRAFTWORKERS

Experience Nordic cultural heritage and traditional maritime craftsmanship! The boatbuilder, blacksmith, rope maker, sail maker, willow worker, wood carver and weaver are working all day and stand ready to talk about materials, tools and techniques.

FIRE AND FLAMES
Members of the Charcoal Burners Guilds from Aggerbo and Eskilstrup combine forces to burn a charcoal stack. We will smelt iron from bog ore in a furnace and demonstrate how the Vikings acquired one of the most sought after materials of the day, 1000 years ago. The blacksmith will make nails and tools from the iron. The bronze caster uses Viking Age techniques to cast jewellery.

MEET THE VIKINGS
Step into the Viking Age and experience its sounds and smells with the help of costumes, tents and equipment, all as authentic as possible. The Vikings demonstrate hand crafts and sell their beautiful products. You can also meet the warriors, who demonstrate the craft of fighting.

TASTE THE VIKING AGE
We have invited producers who are focused on improving a good meal. Come and have an enlightening chat, taste the selected products and buy something for making food in your own kitchen.  The ingredients in use are all known from the Viking Age.

ROSKILDE WOODEN BOAT RACE   -  BUILD YOUR OWN SHIP
Do you like to cut, hammer and build creative and funny things?  Transform natural materials such as bark, wood and rope into a fantastical ship.  Take part in the Roskilde Wooden Boat Race for fanciful ships.

BOATYARD
The Viking Ship Museum’s boatbuilders are shaping planks for the Skuldelev 3, a reconstruction of a smaller trading vessel. Come and try your hand at the Boatbuilder's Workshop. Work with fresh oak and Viking tools. You can also visit the boatyard on the Museum Island.

GO SAILING
The Viking Ship Museum invites you on board for a unique sailing trip in squaresailed, Nordic boats, a type which have been used for trade, fishing and transport for a thousand years. Take your

family or friends with you and enjoy a special experience, in safe and historical surroundings.

FOR THE CHILDREN
In the Viking Ship Hall, children of all ages can try on Viking costumes, write with runes, play a Viking game and hear about life in the Viking Age. At the Museum’s workshops you can strike your own coin, paint a shield, decorate a Thor’s hammer or make jewellery with glass beads. Some activities have an additional charge.
