Summer theme weeks at the Viking Ship Museum

Throughout the summer the Viking Ship Museum focus on the many different maritime crafts and other special vikinge activities.

Depending on when you visit the museum, you can go for war training, learn boatbuilding, meet the black smith or help make wood tar with the museum's skilled craftsmen.

26 June - 2 July: Try your hand at ropemaking

The rope-maker makes ropes of sealskin, wool and horsehair for the museum's boats. From the 26th of June to the 2nd of July you can your hand at making autentic Viking Age ropes from lime-tree bast or try spinning a horse-hair thread with expert guidance and help from the rope-maker.

3 - 9 July: Warrior training with sword and shield

At the Viking Ship Museum, you can try your hand at the fighting techniques mastered by the Vikings during this special week. The warriors must be ready to defend the country against enemies, take part in a raid or fight in the service of the King.

10 - 16 July: Try your hand at boat building.

The Viking Ship Museum’s boatbuilders are busy building a new replica of a Viking ship at the boat yard.
If you visit the museum this week, you can cleave small logs and work with the boatbuilders tools.

17 -23 July: How to produce tar and charcoal

We'll light up the fire, so you can burn tar from pine. Tar is extracted from resinous pine and protects the Viking ships from rot. It's usually made in large Mils, which burns for four days and provides several thousand liters of tar.
During the theme week we set tar production into micro format so everyone can follow the exciting process.

24 - 30 July: Blacksmithing - how to forge the red-hot iron

The Viking Ship Museum's skilled black smiths shows their special techniques to the museum's guests who can come close to the complicated and mysterious smithing technique this week. 

31 July - 6 August: Try your hand at boat building.

The Viking Ship Museum’s boatbuilders are busy building a new replica of a Viking ship at the boat yard.

7 - 13 August: Use of the boats

Go on board the Viking Ship Museum's Viking ships and participate in activities on board the warship, cargo ship and the fishing vessel.

14 - 20 August: Sailmakers Workshop – try it yourself

Meet the weaver, the ropemaker and the sailmaker as they work on the different sails from the boat collection of the Viking Ship Museum. 

21 - 27 August: By the Edge of the Sea – Storytelling Week

Fantastic stories, which will sweep you away, told by some of the world’s best storytellers.
