Newsletter from the Viking Ship Museum - 3 February: Go shopping in the Viking Age

Go shopping in the Viking Age

The Viking Ship Museum invites children and adults on a shopping trip in the Viking Age during the winter holidays.

The Vikings were the first people in Scandinavian history to fit sails to their ships and acquire the ability to travel much further. When the Vikings returned home from an expedition or trading voyage, the ship was loaded with new and exciting goods and practices. Where could the Vikings purchase glass? How much did a walrus tooth cost? Did the Vikings trade in slaves?

The year is 1010 and the Danes’ victorious king, Svend Tveskæg (fork beard), is celebrating his 50th birthday. Svend Tveskæg is busily engaged in conquering England, but he returns home and celebrates his birthday and receives plenty of presents.

What do you give an important king of the Vikings for his birthday? Svend Tveskæg has composed a wish list and now it is up to you to travel out into the world and fill the hold of the cargo ship with valuable presents for your great king. The ship is prepared and the course must be set for foreign coasts and trading stations. Have a good wind on your trip around the museum.

Facts:
You will receive a map and Svend Tveskægs wish-list in the museum’s shop.

You can set out on a trade expedition around the museum every day from 15-26 February between 10:30-16:00.

There will also be free guided tours for the museum’s guests at 12:00 (in English) and 14:00 (in Danish).

On most days during week 7 and 8, you can meet Anna Nørgaard on the ‘jetty’, where she will be weaving a woollen sail for one of the Viking Ship Museum’s traditional boats.

This has been an interest for a long time from many sides and we are now ready to welcome you to a world of Nordic maritime culture lasting over a thousand years.

Winter on Roskilde Fjord

Now that “King Winter” has descended over the Roskilde area, we in the Viking Ship Museum’s picture archive feel that this would be a good time to show an old film clip from the archive.
