7 - 13 August: Use of the boats

Published 15th Jul 2017

Go on board the Viking Ship Museum's Viking ships and participate in activities on board the warship, cargo ship and the fishing vessel.

All the boats in The Viking Ship Museums harbour were designed for specific purposes. Week 32 we will put our boat’s original use under the microscope. Our big reconstruction of a Viking cargo ship will be loaded and unloaded, fishing nets will be set and checked in traditional Norwegian and Faeroe boats, and goods will be transported in the reconstructions of the 1130 ad. Gislinge Boat.

Every day at 11.30 am one of our skilled skippers will give a talk about our ships and their experimental archaeological test voyages. How did the Vikings navigate on their long, open ocean voyages? How do you get 65 crew members on board a 30 meter long Viking ship to work as a unit? And what is life like on board the sailing reconstructions? Those are just a few of the topics that will be handled in the talks.
