17– 23 July: Making wood-tar from pine

17– 23 July: The Viking Ship Museum will have the fires lit and the public can try their hand at making tar from pine.

Pine and Fire

The sound of axes chopping and the scent of wood and tar spread across the boatyard on the Museum Island. Right now, you have the chance to produce the protective tar.

We start the fires, so you can make tar from pine wood within half an hour.

Tar protects the Viking ships from rot. Tar is produced from pine, which has a high resin-content. It is normally extracted in large stacks, which burn over several days and produce several hundred litres of tar.
