Viking craftwork, workshops and viking play

The museum is buzzing with craftmanship and you can follow the craftmens work: the boatbuilder, the blacksmith, the wood carver, the ropemaker and the weaver.
They will all demonstrate their skills and if you are over 8 years of age, you can try your hand at the difficult crafts.

Try your hand at boatbuilding in the boatbuilders workshop. Work with fresh oak and the Vikings’ tool! You can watch the professional boatbuilders work while working with the axe, hammer, drill and knife yourself. Do you want to get creative? Then visit the workshop where you can build model boats and test how seaworthy they are. There is a ample opportunity to try and experiment, and to think over what it takes to make a boat sail.

Adults and children can explore, play, fantasize and learn about ships, sailing and the Viking age. Viking Age - labyrinth - write with runes - Can you survive as a viking - Dress like a viking - Climb aboard the Viking ships - sailor's diploma.

Guided tours

At the Viking Ship Museum we strive to convey our knowlegde of The Viking Age to adults as well as children and so we offer four diffent kinds of guided tours.

Want to learn all about Viking ships?
Daily guided tours focus on the five original Viking ships from Skuldelev, exhibited in the Viking Ships Hall. The ships bear witness to the specialised sea faring of the Viking Age, to wars and raids, trade and voyages to distant shores and life in the North 1000 years ago.

Embark on a special family tour
In the weekends, the Viking Ship Museum invites children and adults to take part in an exciting journey in the Vikings’ world! Join us on a family tour, where the focus is set on the Vikings’ journeys. We offer two different stories: one about war and trade, the other about journeys to distant shores.

Welcome to the boatyard
The boatbuilders invite you behind the scenes, where they’re in full swing with many projects.  The summer’s main task is a reconstruction of Skuldelev 3 – a small trading ship. The Museum’s guides will show you around and tell all about the materials, tools and techniques of the their craft.
