Avnslev

In Avnslev, 4.5km from the Great Belt, archaeologists have unearthed traces of a Viking Age settlement. A rune stone associated with "Roulv of Helnæs" was found on a hill south of Avnslev Church in 1628. The stone was moved to Copenhagen but was destroyed in the Copenhagen Fire of 1723 – luckily it was transcribed before then, so we know that it said: “ … stands this stone. Rov... placed ... and Roulv made ... “ In 2016, Avnslev made the headlines when a metal detector user found an extremely rare crucifix here. It’s from the 900s and thus probably the oldest depiction of Christ in Denmark. It can be seen in the National Museum.
