Mejrup Burial Mound

10km east of Holstebro lies the small Mejrup Church, where there has been a burial mound in the cemetery since ancient times. A legend says that the three churches of Mejrup, Måbjerg and Møborg, which lie in a straight line along Nissum Fjord, were built by three maidens who lie buried in the mound. If the churches should ever fall into disrepair, there is said to be enough money hidden in the mound to rebuild them – but if anyone ever digs in the hill to obtain the money for a different purpose, there will be an outbreak of plague!  Courageous archaeologists have nonetheless dared to excavate the mound, which turned out to date from the Viking Age, and in the vicinity they also found traces of a Viking Age settlement.
