Østskoven

In the mid-1980s, Esbjerg municipality bought land east of the town with the intention of planting new woodlands for the benefit of the citizens.  Prior to this, archaeologists from Esbjerg Museum were given an opportunity to excavate in the area, where they found evidence of continuous settlement throughout ancient times. Today, the forest is a favourite excursion spot for local people. There is an exhibition hall about the archaeological finds, and a 3.5 km nature trail through the area, called Oldtidsruten ("the Ancient Road"). It passes by the foundations of the houses found, which are marked on the forest floor.
