The Old Fortress at Paradisbakkerne

It soon becomes obvious to visitors onsite why the landscape around 4km northwest of Nexø, with its rugged cliffs, forests and bogs, was always called paradise. Here you can visit another fascinating Gamleborg at Paradisbakkerne – another of the island’s refuge fortresses – and for a moment imagine how people have sought refuge here from invaders and other terrors. It was built on an approx. 20m high rock massif, perhaps as far back as the Bronze Age.  The discovery of many shards of so-called "Baltic Ceramic’" with its characteristic wavy lines clearly shows that people continued to seek refuge here right up to Viking times. The southwest side consists of vertical cliffs so it didn’t need ramparts as the other sides did.
