The Old Fortress on Almindingen

The formidable rock plateau is a natural fortification in itself, but the Vikings reinforced this further using a mix of boulders, clay and soil as ramparts. Here, deep in the heart of Bornholm amongst rocky peaks and deep defiles Gamleborg probably functioned as the king’s main fortress; far away as it is from the coast and marauding pirates. Exactly which king built Gamleborg is not known. But from Wulfstan’s report we know that Bornholm had its own king  around the time the fortress was built. Today you can see the ruins of this Viking Age citadel, which was in constant use from the time the oldest part was built in the 900s and well into the early Middle Ages.
