Pine and flames

Members of the Charcoal Burner’s Guilds from Aggerbo and Eskilstrup combine forces to burn a charcoal stack. The end result will be charcoal.

Charcoal is made of wood that is burned in a sealed stack. The charcoal burners control the burn in order to first evaporate all of the moisture within the wood. Combustible gases are then developed, which are absorbed by the charcoal. Charcoal is almost a super-fuel when compared with ordinary firewood.

From bog ore to iron

The iron smelter has learned the Viking Age art of smelting iron from bog ore using a smelting furnace. During the festival, we will smelt iron from bog ore in a furnace and show how the Vikings acquired one of the most sought after materials, 1000 years ago.

From iron to nails

The blacksmith is hand-forging tools and nails, which hold the planks of the Museum’s reconstructions together. Many well-preserved blacksmithing tools from the Viking Age have been found. Then, as now, the most important equipment was the anvil, hammer, tongs and chisel.

It’s hard, hot and dirty work, transforming the glowing iron into the different items.

Bronze casting

Bronze was often used to make Viking Age jewellery. With his skill in combining copper and tin to make bronze, Ken Ravn Hedegaard uses Viking Age techniques and materials. It is a lengthy process, which takes place over several days. Ken demonstrates stages of the process and tells about the production of bronze jewellery.
