Nordic Craftwork

Experience Nordic cultural heritage and traditional maritime craftsmanship! Craftworkers will be working all day and stand ready to talk about materials, tools and techniques. 

Boatbuilder

The Viking Ship Museum’s boatbuilders are shaping planks for the Skuldelev 3, a reconstruction of a smaller trading vessel. Follow their work as they warm the planks over an open fire. 
You can also visit the boatyard on the Museum Island.

Rope maker 

The ‘Sif Ege’ boat guild is making lime bast rope. The rope makers Carsten Hvid and Bjarni Sørensen an Peter jensen are making rope from hemp for the Museum’s boat collection. You can also visit the rope maker’s workshop on the Museum Island.

Sail maker

The sail maker from Sejlmager Hansens Eftf., is displaying various types of sail canvas and repairing sails. Weaver Anne Nørgaard is weaving a sail from flax for the Gislinge Boat. Help Anna spin caulking threads for the Gislinge Boat. 

Sheep farmer

Mette Ahm has taken the old Nordic Spelsau sheep breed with her and can tell you all about how useful the breed is. The wool can also be used for weaving sailcloth.

Flax workshop 

The mobile flax workshop displays and demonstrates the processes involved in transforming raw flax into spun fibres and finished yarns. Flax can also be used for weaving sailcloth. 

Woodcarver

Sanne Seipelt is carving wooden bailers and dragon-heads for the Museum’s boat collection.

Willow worker

Willow worker Hella Olsson demonstrates basketry.

Basket maker

Madelene Jørgensen is producing coiled baskets – a technique that has been used in Denmark since the Stone Age.

Warrios

Warriors from the Viking Age combat group, Ulfhednir, demonstrate the art of battle and the use of different types of weapons and shield formations.

The Crafts and Vikings Festival runs the 19th and the 20th of August from 10:00 to 17:00

Admission to the Viking Ship Museum and the Festival: Museum admission 130 kr. for adults. Under 18 years old free admission. The ticket includes admission to the Festival.
