Guided tours about the Viking Ships

1000 years ago, the Vikings sailed along the coasts of Europe, up rivers and across the open sea in their impressive ships.

Only very few of the famous Viking ships have been preserved to this day. The Viking Ship Museum exhibits the five Viking ships that were found and excavated in Roskilde Fjord.

Stepping into the Viking Ship Hall at the Viking Ship Museum is like entering a time capsule.

Five very different ships rest on a stone beach with the changing weather of Roskilde Fjord as a backdrop. It's almost like stepping into a scene from a 1000-year-old past, where our ancestors had just pulled these same ships ashore after sailing them on the fjord.

Experience the history of the ships unfold on our guided tour, as our knowledgeable guides take you around the ships and bring them to life.

We offer a daily guided tour in English in the Viking Ship Hall that will put the discovery of the five Skuldelev ships in perspective in relation to the maritime culture of the Viking Age - and provide an insight into how the Vikings changed the world with these ships before they were sunk in the 11th century to protect the sea route to the royal city of Roskilde from attacks.

The five Viking ships together provide a diverse insight into the maritime world of the Viking Age, where the ships made it possible to trade with goods from distant lands, secured the country's defence and warfare - and gave the people of the past the opportunity to explore new horizons.

No ships, no Viking Age!
