Dræby

West of Munkebo lies the village Dræby. The name comes from the Viking Age, and literally means the dragging place. Here, ships were dragged overland to save time. Exactly how this hauling job was done we don’t know, but based on experimental attempts elsewhere a quick calculation shows that the 800 meters, which in Viking times was the distance between Kertinge Nor and Odense Fjord, took less than 1 hour. A much faster alternative to sailing all the way around Fyns Hoved!
