The Rosenlund Grave

Lying south of the motorway, Bytoften on the outskirts of Langeskov was excavated in 1989-91 and archaeologists found traces of both Iron Age and Viking settlements. The buildings are now marked and explained on site. The name Bytoften means something like "here, in this field, was once a village." When the motorway across Funen was being built in 1978, archaeologists found a chamber grave in nearby Rosenlund. This held the remains of a distinguished Viking horseman. A horseman’s grave contains riding equipment: stirrups, the fittings from the bridle and in some case the actual horse. The artefacts from the Rosenlund grave are shared between The Ladby Viking Museum and Møntergården in Odense.
