Viby

Four kilometres from Aarhus city centre lies Viby, "the holy place". It was in all likelihood here that the Vikings of Aros went to worship their ancient gods – Tyr, the god of war after whom the locality Tyrseng is named, and Odin, whose name lives on in Onsholt, Odin’s forest. In 2002, in Snekkeeng, not far from Viby, the remains of a Viking-era fleet harbour were found, with large amounts of waste wood and boat parts. It was in use around 797-1266, which corresponds with Saxo’s mention of Aarhus as the gathering place for the fleet.
