09:00 am: We practise laying down the mast.
10:30 am: We row out of Spangereid, the plan is to make some rowing and tacking experiments. Wind W 10 m/sec. (Fresh to strong breeze). - Rowing with all oars and the mast down - rowing with every second oar and the mast down - rowing with all oars and the mast up - rowing with every second oar and the mast up.
13:10 pm: Stop for rowing experiments, sails up.
13:25 pm: Wind W 10-12 m/sec. (Strong breeze). Lowest part of sail reefed.
14:00 pm: Wind 12-14 m/sec. (strong breeze - near gale). Second lowest part of sail reefed.
14:35 pm: Weering ship and heading for harbour.
14:42 pm: Less wind, unreefing sail a bit. Heading for harbour sailing up to 12 knots.
15:36 pm: We take down the sail and row into harbour.
15:55 pm: Back in harbour. Sailed distance of the day 15,4 nautical miles.
We have to adjust the procedures for taking down and raising the mast, making it go quicker.
With wind speeds of 10-11 m/sec. (strong breeze) it was difficult to hold the ship on course, when the mast was up. And we only went half speed compared to when the mast was down.
When we only use every second oar, each rower can use more strength and therefore we can keep a higher speed than when using all oars.
