Museum Østjylland

Randers Museum boasts no less than five stones. The most interesting of these is the Mejlby Stone, which was brought to the museum in 1882 after it had been found in a pond in Mejlby, about 20km south of Randers. It is said to have originally been placed by a burial mound. The stone, which dates to the late 900s, bears the inscription: “Åne raised this stone in memory of Eskil, his son, who died with Thore in the Sound”. This is the first time the place name the Sound (Øresund) appears in written sources. The museum has also created a fantastic animated version of the Mejlby Stone. In an unusual interactive show with light and sound, the story of the stone is recounted via an animation that dramatises the story of Åne, who sent his son Eskil out on a journey that ended in a fatal shipwreck in the Sound.  In 2017, a new exhibition of ancient times opened, entitled Livet ved Fjorden (Life by the Fjord), which includes the Viking Age finds from the Randers region.
