Bøgebjerg Burial Site

“Bøgebjerget is a small, rectangular tree-lined hillcrest which contains a large amount of early Iron-Age graves. In the summer of 1877, this remarkable burial site was investigated, partly by myself and partly by Lord Chamberlain Vedel in my company…”. This is schoolmaster J.A. Jørgensen’s account in 1877, when accompanied by County Governor Vedel, he excavated a small part of the burial site. In three of the stone coffins they found shoulder yokes, the large oval yokes that Viking Age women carried on each shoulder. The area was listed in 1955.
