At the Viking Ship Museum’s boatyard, you can now follow the construction of two small prams, which the museum hopes to hire out.

The little dinghy has been with us for generations and has been used for a wide range of purposes. It has been a simple but effective way of getting around, and the dinghy has brought fish home to many families along the Danish coasts.

Dinghy pram from Fejø

The museum is presently constructing two so-called Fejø-prams. They are being constructed as copies of the prams that were used for fishing around Fejø at the beginning of the last century.

Roskilde Fjord is perfect for a gem of a boat like this. A pram is a flat-bottomed dinghy and there are many small coves in Roskilde Fjord that can be explored up close. Or you can anchor, throw out a line and see if you can tempt a pike onto your hook!

Follow the construction process

Until 1 May it will be possible to follow the boat builder Ture Malte Møller as he builds the prams at the boatyard. The materials used are larch on oak, while the bottom of the pram will be made of pine. The stem and stern-frame will be of oak.

They will be equipped with one set of oars each, an anchor, a bucket and whatever else is required. Coffee, soft drinks and sandwiches you can bring yourself. There is space for four people or max. 350 kg on board and the prams are made unsinkable with buoyancy materials.

The museum has applied to the Danish Maritime Authority for permission to hire out the prams and when permission is obtained, you will be able to test your skills in the noble art of rowing a boat. The Viking Ship Museum is ready with prams and equipment.

Before setting off, you will be given some safety instructions and then you are ready to go. “Row away!" as they say.

Facts

The boat-building takes place on weekdays from 10:00-15:00. Just follow the signs when you arrive. Ture Malthe Møller, who is building the prams, will be happy to explain the work to you.
