The Gunderup Stones

Few of the known rune stones tell us where they were originally placed in the way Gunderup 1 does. Clearly this first stood on top of a grave mound: “Toke raised these stones and made these monuments in memory of Abe [Ebbe], his kinsman-by-marriage, a good thane, and Tove, his mother. Both of them lie in this mound. Abe/Ebbe granted Toke his wealth after him.” The word thane refers to an important man. The stone was subsequently moved like so many others and today you will find it in the porch at Gunderup Church, approx. 20km south of Aalborg.
