The Sjørring Stone

About 15km west of Thisted, "Åse" raised at least two rune stones for two different men. In the porch of Vang Church you can see the stone where Åse had inscribed: “Åse raised this stone in memory of Omunde, her husband, who was Finulv’s housecarl”. The rune stone is also Denmark’s smallest at just 63cm in height. Åse also raised a rune stone in the neighbouring parish of Tvorup, which unfortunately disappeared in the 1600s: Ása raised this stone in memory of {tuku}, her good ...; he was killed on Aufu Heath and was SakaJuters [?] housecarl.”  The stones date from around 1000 – just as Christianity gained traction in Denmark. They were troubled times – Harold Bluetooth and his son Svend Forkbeard fought each other for power, for which Åse and her kin paid dearly.
