The Tillitse Stone

Tillitse is actually one of those places on Lolland-Falster with a Slavic name, which suggests that Wends settled here on a permanent basis. But Vikings with Norse names were here too, as witnessed by the rune stone outside the entrance to Tillitse Church. This stone is special because it carries two different messages; on one side is an expression of affection: “Toke carved these runes in memory of Thora, his stepmother, a good woman.” Towards the end of the Viking Age, Eskil wrote on the other side of the stone: Eskil, Súlki’s son, had this stone raised in memory of himself. Ever will stand, while the stone lives, this memento, which Eskil made. May Christ and Saint Michael help his soul.”
