Recipe: Birka bread - Viking's biscuits

Recipe Birka bread - Viking's biscuits

Remains of bread from the Viking Age have been found in connection with archaeological excavations. The old remnants of bread are charred and therefore they are preserved to this day.
Most finds of charred bread remains have been found at the large trading post 'Birka' in Sweden, close to Stockholm.

The bread remains have been analyzed and the analyzes have shown that there have been several different types of bread.

The type of bread you get the recipe for here is probably a finer kind of bread or closer to a kind of biscuit or cookie, as there is wheat flour, butter and honey in it.

You can easily make the biscuits yourself. They can be made on a pan in the kitchen, but it's more fun to bake them over a campfire if you have the opportunity.

Ingredients:

  • 400ml wheat flour
  • 20ml oats
  • 1/2 tsk salt
  • 50g butter
  • 50ml honey
  • 200ml water

Directions:

  1. Mix wheat flour, oats and salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Distribute the butter with your fingers to mix well into the dough.
  3. Add honey and water and mix well into a dough.
  4. Set aside for 30 mins (while waiting, your child and you can use the time to read the history about vikings)
  5. Take a portion of the dough the size of a walnut and roll it out flat approx. 5mm thick.
  6. Fry on a dry pan (no. 5 or 6 on thestove) until the biscuit is done.
