Stone Ship on Als

There are several examples on Als of the Vikings' special custom of burying their dead beneath stones lined out in a ship formation. Right out at the coast at Stolbro Næs, there was originally a group of four stone ships and three grave mounds. Today, only the rather small mounds and one of the stone ships are visible. The "vessel" is 12m long and 4.5m wide at the centre. It consists of 45 large stones. It was excavated in 1960 and a cautious dating points to 700-800s. 3km further into the fjord, opposite the small island of Katholm, evidence of Viking burials has been found in the nearby gravel bank.
