14th – 20th August: Sailmakers Workshop

Published 13th Aug 2017

From the 14th – 20th August, you can meet the sailmaker and follow the work on the sails.

The sailmaker's workshop

Take a look inside the sailmaker’s workshop and watch as they work with different types of sail.
The Museum’s weaver is busy making a sail of flax for the Gislinge Boat. Harvesting the flax, sorting and processing the fibres for spinning, spinning the thread and weaving the sailcloth involves much effort and demands a great knowledge of the material and how it behaves. The finished sailcloth is delivered to the sailmaker, who then sews and forms the sail. The finished sail will then be tanned using bark to prevent it from rotting.
