Sailing trips on Roskilde Fjord are back

Published 30th Jun 2020

Every day from July 4th to August 9th you can join us for a very special experience on Roskilde Fjord, when we combine sailing and Viking Age knowledge.

At the Viking Ship Museum you can go directly from the encounter with the 1000 year old original viking ships on exhibit in the Viking Ship Hall to the Museum Harbour where you can go on a sailing trip in one of the viking ships' direct decendants - the traditional nordic wooden boats - which now 1000 years later are still built according to the same principles and methods as used by the vikings.

Muscle power and Knowledge about the Viking Age

It is an unique experience to set out on Roskilde Fjord with one of our skilled sailing instructors. We use on of the very same energy sources as the Vikings used to move forward - oars and the muscle power of the crew.
During the trip, the sailing instructor will tell you about about rowing and sailing in the Viking Age and about the use of the traditional open boat.

The trip takes approx. 50 minutes, including allocation of life jackets and an introduction to the ship and rowing technique. All the participants crew the boat and will have to take an active part in the sailing by rowing. Every sailing trip is lead by an experienced sailing instructor.

Daily summer sailing trips

The Viking Ship Museum offers daily summer-sailings from July 4th - August 9th. The ships will depart from the Museum Habour at 11.00, 12.30, 13.40 og 15.00

Price: 120 DDK in addition to the standard admission charge.

Sailing tickets can be purchased at the ticket office at the Museum entrance on the day of the sailing.

Covid-19 information:
In order to take good care of our guests, we provide good space in the boats. There will be a 2 meters distance between the participants and therefore there will only be space for 9 people in each boat. If you visit the museum in a group, and if you are so close acquaintanceses or family that you do not normally keep distance betweenyou, you can be up to 15 people in a boat.
Oars, rails, seats, life jackets, etc. are washed off between each sailing, and a distance of 2 meters is kept between everyone on board during the entire sailing trip. Unfortunately this means that our employees cannot offer physical assistance with boarding, rowing, etc., and we do not have the opportunity to set sail. Unfortunately, we cannot offer special conditions for people with disabilities: You have to be able to row yourself, and because of the distance requirement, our staff is unable to help guests board the boat.

Children on board:
There are a limited number of places available for children (between 4 and ca. 14 years old) and others who cannot row. Unfortunately, children under the age of four cannot participate. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Weather:
We reserve the right to cancel sailing trips if there are insufficient numbers or if the weather represents a safety risk. Always bring practical and waterproof clothing.
