The Hobro Rune Stone

In the passage that leads to the parking area in front of Hobro Library, there’s a rune stone that reads: Thore raised this stone in memory of his comrade Karl the good, a really great lad. On the face of it, just an ordinary rune stone, but because another stone has been found, with exactly the same inscription, in the wall of Ås Church in Sweden, the story suddenly gets more interesting: It’s very possible that Thore was from the Fyrkat area, because there’s yet another stone raised by him for his father Gunner. It was found at Glenstrup between Randers and Hobro and is now on display at the National Museum. Karl, on the other hand, is a name we normally only see on Swedish rune stones; so perhaps Karl was also in the Fyrkat area and then died. His friend Thore may have then raised stones in his memory, both here and in Karl’s own area.
