2013: Maritime Networks and Urbanism in the Early Medieval World

The two-day conference, held 11-12 April 2013 at the Viking Ship Museum, convened an international research forum to explore developments in maritime and urban archaeology around the Northern European seas, the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean during the early Middle Ages.
The concept of network urbanism and maritime networks were reviewed and particular attention was raised to aspects in relation to curating the following special exhibition, ‘The World in the Viking Age’, at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde.

Both the conference and special exhibition were organised jointly by the research project ENTREPOT (Aarhus University, Denmark / University of York, UK) and the Viking Ship Museum.

To accompany the special exhibition, the Viking Ship Museum has published a book that expands on the themes of the exhibition and describes the exhibited artefacts, archaeological sites and the sources concerning the historical figures. The book is published in English and Danish by the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, and edited by Søren M. Sindbæk & Athena Trakadas.
